dont want to hear it

Have you ever felt like your boss, friends or acquintances were just against you? You’re going through some situation in your life, you go to some people who have influence on your life and all they want to do is attack you or make you feel like you’ve done something wrong. You go home feeling like the whole world is against you and you look like the picture above, a person who just doesn’t want to hear it anymore.

I stumbled on this article on CNN and it reminded me of how much people just don’t want to hear anything that is contrary to their own thinking. We’ve moved into this place in society where it’s mean or judgemental to give actual criticism and help a person to grow beyond what they can achieve on their own. People value those who pat them on the back and tell them what they want to hear as opposed to hearing the truth. Here’s the example, these are the tips that the article gives about being a single woman:

1. Don’t take things bitter friends say to heart. They’re projecting — putting their insecurities on you.
2. Don’t chat with negative friends about your love life (or lack there of).
3. Don’t feel forced to date because your friends are.
4. Do go out with supportive friends of all relationship statuses.
5. Do enjoy you. That’s the only person you’ll definitely be with forever.

Although the article is definitely talking about friends and the people around you, it is definitely focused on one thing, yourself. The maybe not so subversive message here is “Whatever you do, make sure it’s right for you, no matter what anyone else has to say about.”

This attitude will kill. It will kill your career, your relationships, your soul and your being. Your life was not meant to be lived for the sole purpose of making yourself feel good all the time. Great work is hard for a reason. If you only did what you wanted to do (what’s easy and comfortable) all the time, no growth would happen. If we make growth the goal, everything else will fall into place.
